Girl Gives Back

Briefly describe the organizations you volunteer for and your roles in the foundations.

  • Young Professionals Group - former steering committee member, currently Community Involvement committee member
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Black Hills- former big sister, currently on Board of Directors and member of Resource Development Committee
  • Black Hills in Motion Clogging Group- we perform around the Black Hills at different functions, including Wilson Park Festival, assisted living homes, and Main Street Square.
  • I also volunteer as a packet distributor for United Way in the fall along with the Rapid City Jaycees and the Humane Society.

Tell us something about the journey that led you to the organization.

(I will reference to Big Brothers/Big Sisters). I signed up to be a big sister in 2002, my little sister at the time was 6 years old and now she is almost 20 years old! I was compelled to be a “big sister” because I had no sisters growing up and thought it would be fun. Then, as we spent more time together, I realized the special bond that comes out of this relationship. Now I serve on the board of directors to help the organization as a whole make more successful matches.

What motivates you to stay involved?

Watching my little sister overcome obstacles and grow up to become a responsible, young woman really motivates me to stay involved with the organization. Watching all the young lives that BB/BS impacts and hearing all the touching stories of children’s lives changed for the better keeps me involved and invested in this organization.

Describe one of your favorite moments you’ve experienced while volunteering.

One special moment for me as a big was when my little sister graduated from high school, that was one of my ultimate goals for her. I knew the hard work and dedication it took for her to complete that goal and I‘m so honored to have been a part of her accomplishment.

Why do you believe it is important to volunteer?

I think it’s important to give back in whatever capacity you can. We are each given unique talents and gifts and it only seems right to share them with others. As the saying goes, the best things in life aren’t things, they are the experiences and memories shared with others. It feels good to be able to give back to a community that has given so much to me.
