2017 Beauty Picks
by Jessie Fewson

I have been a professional makeup artist for many years and during that time countless numbers of products have passed through my hands. One of the most common questions my clients ask is what products or brands I prefer. I have chosen to share some products that I use from both designer and drugstore brands. My clients are often surprised that I use and prefer some less expensive products over some of the top names, but I am a firm believer that you don’t always have to break the bank to find a good product. I ultimately judge a product on how it performs, whether on myself for a busy day or on a client for an event or performance, rather than what it costs.

Designer Brand: Both Urban Decay® All Nighter and Lancome® Teint Idole 24-Hour are very light weight and offer beautiful full coverage. The Lancome formula is slightly more moisturizing and fluid, and is great for mature skin.

Drugstore Brand: Maybellene® Fit Me offers light-weight full coverage and can compete with some of the top brands for a lasting finish. If you are oily, opt for the Matte and Poreless version, and if you have dry or mature skin, try the Dewy and Smooth version.

Designer Brand: Stila Huge™ mascara gives you lovely length and separates the lashes very well. Diorshow Blackout mascara has been my go-to for years, but it is not for the faint of heart; it creates thick, bold, black lashes that are great for a glam look or a night out.

Drugstore Brand: Loreal® Volumous (Original Formula) is one of the best drugstore formulas that I have used, and I always keep a tube in my kit. This formula creates lovely long, thick, bold lashes.

Brow productsBrow Products

Designer Brand: Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow® Pomade is a very pigmented gel that goes on easily and stays put all day. I use Smashbox Brow Tech Shaping Powder to set and finish the brows after the pomade.

Drugstore Brand: Maybelline® Brow Drama Pro Palette has a pomade, setting powder, and highlighting powder. This kit is an extremely good value as it also contains the tools you need to create the perfect chiseled brow.

Setting Powder

Designer Brand: Makeup Forever® HD Pressed Powder is lightweight and very finely milled, which means that it has an almost invisible finish that won’t leave you looking cakey.

Drugstore Brand: NYX HD Finishing Powder® is a fraction of the cost of the designer brand, but it is also very finely milled and offers a smooth flawless finish.

Designer Brand: Diorskin Nude Air Illuminizer® has a lovely soft texture and its illuminating finish is radiant. This product is pricey considering it is a highlighting powder; however, you generally only use a couple of sweeps of the brush for each application, so it does last a very long time.

Drugstore Brand: NYX Illuminating Powder® goes on flawlessly and gives a perfect soft shimmering highlight. This powder is very pigmented so when applying remember that a little bit goes a long way.

Designer Brand: The Urban Decay Vice lipstick range is highly pigmented and ultra creamy. This formula also stays put very well when paired with a good lip liner.

Drugstore Brand: Maybelline Colorsational® lipsticks have great pigment and stand up in performance with some of the top designer brands. I always have lipsticks from this line in my kit.

So if you want to splurge for the designer makeup, go ahead! But if going easy on the budget is important, you can still be confident that you can find great makeup products without breaking the bank.
