The Girl Gives Back

I am involved with a few organizations. I serve on the Rapid City Concert Association board, volunteer for the Humane Society, and participate in the United Way Day of Caring. Previously I have served on the Community Health Center board and was a member of the Lions Club. I work for Big Brothers Big Sisters where I interview children and volunteers and match them in mentor relationships. I like to say I’m a matchmaker.

ABOUT MY JOURNEY THAT LED ME TO THE ORGANIZATION.

I started as a volunteer with BBBS about 17 years ago. I was a Big Sister to an awesome young lady until she graduated from high school. Then I went on to volunteer with the Campus Kids program at SDSM&T. When graduating from SDSM&T I was asked what my future plans were. My reply was to get a job somewhere like BBBS. In less than a year, there was a job opening and I knew it had to be mine. I have now been employed with BBBS for 8 years.

WHAT MOTIVATES ME TO STAY INVOLVED?

BBBS is such a wonderful organization in that it provides children from varied backgrounds with new experiences and someone to believe in them. Statistics show what a lasting effect one hour per week can have on a child. I have witnessed firsthand as children in our program have grown into amazing young adults who have gone on to do great things. This past year I ran into my Little Sister at the circus. She introduced me to her significant other as her Big Sister. It was the best feeling ever. Positive impacts and life-long relationships are what make it all worthwhile.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOMENTS WHILE VOLUNTEERING:

My favorite memory of my time as a Big Sister happened at my Little Sister’s high school commencement. She had moved to Iowa, but we kept our match going through phone calls and visits. When I heard she was graduating, I got all of the information and decided to drive to Iowa to surprise her. Next to the first day we met, the look on her face at that moment is one of my favorite memories with her. I am so proud of the woman, and the mother she has become.

I BELIEVE IT IS IMPORTANT TO VOLUNTEER.

For me, children, animals, and music are what make my heart happy, so I chose to dedicate my time to these organizations. Everyone has something they excel at. When there are so many people that don’t have much, we need to be grateful for what we do have and use our gifts to make someone else’s life a little better. In turn, it will make our lives better as well. It just makes sense.
