Volunteer...

I am the Founder and Executive Director of Fork Real Community Café, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to increasing food security and community building through a unique pay-what-you-can restaurant model. In phase III, Fork Real will open the doors to everyone, regardless of means, to enjoy a nutritious home-cooked meal with dignity. Fork Real proudly serves alongside other organizations in Rapid City to strengthen relationships in our community while networking globally with OWEE-One World Everyone Eats.

It’s a blessing to be part of Fountain Springs Church where serving others is not what you do, but how you live it out day by day, with Love, INC where people are empowered with the tools to heal brokenness with unconditional love, with Safe Family where children are safe and loved, with the local mission and the Hope Center who give a powerful voice to the homeless, and the loving hearts of individuals in our area who do their part to make a difference.

Journey...

After 10 years in the education system and while completing my Master’s of Education in the neuroscience of holistic community learning, I decided to step away from teaching to pursue my passion of cooking and love for people. With my God-given gifts and out-of-the-box thinking, I knew that I could make a difference in our community through food.

My journey led me through managing the kitchen of the Cornerstone Rescue Mission for a year where I saw beautiful people with brokenness in their lives. I realized that we do not have a lack of food, but a lack of nutritious food within a loving community setting. When given the opportunity to learn about fresh produce, more was eaten. When relationships are built, lives are changed. How could I use locally grown produce and relationship building to make a difference in our community? By bringing the two to the table.

The concept of a café where people of any social economics are welcomed to enjoy a nutritious meal while conversing face-to-face is the difference I wanted to make.

Motivates...

We are all called to serve one another in love not just one day, but every day. I am motivated by LOVE!

One favorite Volunteering moment...

As a Safe Families volunteer with Bethany Christian Services, we have had the opportunity to share our love with several families. One particular little boy, who lived with us for four months, made a lasting impression in our lives. He came to us with few words, but soon blossomed into this self confident butterfly. When we first said “I love you” to him, he responded “you do?” for over a month, until it became a daily conversation piece except with an “I love you, too” to follow. We have learned that love is patient, love is kind, and true love is worth the time we invest.

How you can help...

There are so many ways to help our community. I would first and foremost say to look at what your passions are and get plugged into an organization that allows you to use the gifts you have been given. If you are not sure what your passion is, start with your local church.

But if your passion is loving people through food, please contact us for your next steps. We would love to have you volunteer in our new campaign of “Fork on the GO”; fresh made daily take-out specials starting the middle of Oct Wed-Fri 11-1. If you are unable to serve physically, you can be apart of our family that supports us financially. Learn more about Fork Real Community Café by visiting our website at ForkRealCafe.org
